Paragraph Describing the Act of Disobedience- Alex
Senator Joseph McCarthy stated that communists had gained access to the United States government in the 1950s. His acts of disobedience and his legacy are known as McCarthyism. A search for people that sympathized with communism began, with Senator McCarthy as one of the key players. The suspected communists (many were later found innocent) were stripped of their occupations and passports, and some were jailed. The lives of people like Waldo Salt and Lillian Hellman were completely transformed as they were thought down upon by the public. The suspected communists were consequently blacklisted and were forced to live a life in hiding. McCarthy and his supporters continued to convict hundreds of suspected communists until public interest in the issue died down in 1954. After, many actors and writers who had been accused as communists were able to return to work, and Senator McCarthy’s approval ratings drastically decreased until his eventual removal from the Senate. Many people that were questioned by the House un-American activities committee were obedient and gave in to the allegations. However, there were also many citizens, such as Arthur Miller and William Mandel, who were courageous and disobedient. These brave citizens stood up for themselves and did what they thought was right. They were punished for their disobedience, but were later rewarded for their courage and devotion. These people were not afraid to stand up for themselves to prove a point. They surrendered their reputations in order to protest an institution that shattered the lives of many.
Achievements (#9)- AlexSenator McCarthy and his supporters feared that the Communist Party of the United States wished to overthrow the U.S. government just as the Bolsheviks had done in Russia. Consequently, McCarthy sought to weed out the "evil" communist party members and make them confess to outrageous allegations in many tedious and painful interrogations. The senator interviewed many suspected communists and badgered them to try to get them to tell him what they wanted to hear. He wished to subsequently have these individuals charged for treason and put to shame. As it turns out, many of the victims of these false claims were just ordinary people who may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Arthur Miller, writer of "The Crucible" was able to successfully stand up to McCarthy and his team of senators. At the time, Miller's actions were viewed as disobedient. However, today, Miller's actions are viewed as heroic. His play is a best seller as it relates the tradgic Salem witch hunt of the 17th century to the 1950s when McCarthy was in power. Others that were able to get their points across included William Mandel and David Merrill. McCarthy was unsuccessful at getting these people convicted of treason, as many of them claimed their fifth amendment rights during interrogations. However, he did shatter the reputations of many ordinary actors, artists, and other professionals whom he claimed to be communists. Eventually, people realized that McCarthy was wrong, and his errors needed to be corrected.
